![]() ![]() In addition to the respective game these editions will also come with a Pokéball Cartridge Case & Hoenn Pokédex Poster. These will be the Pokémon Omega Ruby Starter Box and - naturally - the Pokémon Alpha Sapphire Starter Box both are due in Europe on 30th October. The absence of Super Mystery Dungeon until next year in Europe clearly leaves Nintendo with a 'mon-sized hole in its 3DS line-up for the end of the year, so as part of today's information overload it confirmed two fresh editions for the region. Game Freak, evidently, needs more time to produce its next major entry. This chart describes purely the STAB power against Gym Leader and Elite Four Pokémon, and does not go into their weaknesses. After two consecutive years with 'main' Pokémon games on the 3DS, this year brings the spin-off Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon in North America while Europeans need to wait until 2016. The gyms and Pokémon are likely to change in the upcoming remakes, but it should be very similar to this line-up. I made an excel chart with the information from Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire to determine which is the best starter for the game. Swampert has strength and resistance, a powerful combination. Its boosted Attack stat will make this Pokémon a scary opponent for any Gym Leader, Elite Four Member, or Champion. When Mega Swampert makes an appearance, beware. Mudkip, considering stats, in-game competitors, and weaknesses, is the best starter for Hoenn. It's a great Pokémon for the Elite Four, since it will not go down easy. ![]() Plus, every starter has trouble with Dragon-type Pokémon. ![]() The biggest threats are Water and Dragon Pokémon (since it does little damage against them), but even then, it can handle tough blows. There are very few Pokémon that Swampert has trouble dealing with. Once a Marshtomp, this starter has absolutely no problems with the gyms. Swampert's stats total up to 535, making it the "strongest" starter in that regard. Its move set: including Mudshot, Muddy Water, Earthquake, etc makes it easy to sweep with. It has high defense, good attack, and decent HP. It's a safe choice given that your gym battles are not strong against this Pokémon. ![]() Mega Blaziken, once you can evolve Blaziken, gets higher Attack power and a Speed Boost ability, making him an even better sweeper. With all of this in mind, I believe Torchic is the second best starter for the game. It does a lot of Super Effective damage, but its low defense makes it prone to fainting to one powerful attack. Its speed and double-typing give it the upper hand in many situations. The first gym is hard for Torchic, but once past that, there are no real difficulties until Wallace. However, its downfall is its terrible defense. It has a high speed stat, and is a good sweeper. In fact, if you choose this starter, you should evolve it quickly or it will have trouble with the first gyms. Combusken is a powerful early game Pokémon. Torchic becomes a Fire/Fighting-type from its second evolution and on. This definitely changes how effective it will be in-game. Due to this, I can't be sure if Mega Sceptile, who gets an added Dragon-type and Lightning Rod ability, will be present for gym battles. How and when you get a Mega Stone in the upcoming game is unknown. Strictly in-game speaking, Treecko is the worst starter of the 3. Many of the Water/Ice Pokemon will give it trouble because of its weakness to Ice. After Roxanne, you won't see it do any real damage until the last two gyms. Aside from this, its base stats are not the best.Īlthough its speed is impressive, this starter will struggle with many gyms along your journey. It has powerful stab moves, but mostly late game. Its speed is the highest out of all the starters once it reaches Sceptile. Treecko is the only Hoenn starter that keeps its sole grass-type throughout its evolution. Looking at the gym and Elite 4 challenges, which starter has the upper hand? Treecko However, these types shift a bit through their evolutions. At the start of your Hoenn adventure, you have the choice between: Treecko, Torchic, or Mudkip, the typical Grass/Fire/Water trio. ![]()

Starting with The Bossa Nova Hotel in 2010, Janey and her husband Bruce Gaitsch have performed regularly at The Cotton Club in Tokyo, Japan. In 2012, the Bossa Nova Hotel’s cover of “A Day In The Life Of A Fool” became the theme song for the popular Japanese TV show “LIFE,” and is still running today. In 2016 the Bossa Nova Hotel released their stunning version of Fragile as a balm for the troubled times we live in. “Moon Island” won Best-Engineered Pop CD in Japan in December of 2009. The reason that they didn’t turn was due to magical items: the Vizier had his staff, the Prince had the dagger, and Farah was protected by an amulet. Everyone in the palace is turned into a sand monster with the exception of the Vizier, the Prince, and the Maharaja’s daughter, a princess called Farah. When he does, it releases the eponymous “Sands of Time”, which the Vizier believed to grant immortality. The Vizier then manages to trick the Prince into using the dagger as a key to open the Hourglass. Sharaman refuses, saying that the Prince should hold onto it as a keepsake. When he sees the Prince with the dagger, he demands to be given it. A little later, it’s revealed that the Maharaja’s Vizier had traitorously instigated the attack in order to gain possession of a magical hourglass. He finds his way inside and steals a dagger. In Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, the Prince is a brash young man who joins his father, King Sharaman, in the siege of an Indian city. The 2008 graphic novel, entitled simply Prince of Persia, is worth checking out for both its artwork and its strangely complex plot I’ll also reference some of creator Jordan Mechner’s notes in that book in the following discussion. The movie adaptation from 2010, released by Disney, won’t be discussed here. I’ll also briefly touch upon the notion that the series is an Orientalist fantasy. ![]() The second part of this article will focus on the most recent mainline games: 2008’s reboot Prince of Persia and the 2010 instalment The Forgotten Sands, which is a direct sequel to The Sands of Time and a prequel to Warrior Within. The present article deals with the original Sands of Time trilogy, released between 20. Since there’s actually quite a lot to write about, this article is divided into two parts. Despite their age, the games all still look fantastic, with great level design and smooth animations. Presentation tends to be top-notch, with the first game essentially launching the genre of the cinematic platformer. The gameplay in all of the Prince of Persia games rests on three main pillars: traversal in the form of parkour-like platforming, combat, and solving fairly simple puzzles. In The Forgotten Sands, you’ll explore another unnamed city that is associated with King Solomon. In 2008’s Prince of Persia, the setting is a sprawling, but otherwise unnamed Persian city. In Warrior Within, you’ll explore the “Island of Time”, while in The Two Thrones, you’ll run, jump, and climb around the city of Babylon. In The Sands of Time, you’ll explore an Indian palace. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time was a critical and commercial hit and spawned a new series of games.Įach of the games is set in a single location. Mechner was shown some early gameplay and was so enthused that he joined the development staff and wrote the game’s story. But in the early twenty-first century, Ubisoft acquired the rights and began work on a new 3D game in the series. Prince of Persia 3D was not a success due to its stiff controls and unappealing graphics. A sequel was released in 1993, subtitled The Shadow and the Flame, also developed by Mechner.Ī different development team worked on the third instalment, Prince of Persia 3D, which was a three-dimensional polygonal game influenced by Tomb Raider (1996), which itself featured the kind of realistic platforming that the original Prince of Persia had introduced in the late 1980s. It spawned the genre of “cinematic” platforming games. The original game was incredibly successful and ported to virtually every computer system and console imaginable. ![]() It’s your task to escape and run, jump, climb, and fight your way to the Vizier. The Prince, who serves as the game’s player character, is in love with the princess and has been thrown into the dungeons of the palace. The sultan’s daughter is locked up and to be executed in one hour precisely. With the sultan off to fight a war, his evil Vizier seizes the throne. The story of this very first entry in the series is simple. ![]() While initially without a particular theme, Mechner was eventually encouraged to pick an Arabian Nights-like setting and plot for the game. The game is a 2D platformer, notable for its use of rotoscoping to create fluid and realistic-looking animations. The original Prince of Persia was published in 1989 and created by Jordan Mechner. ![]() |
